ダ・ビンチのことばそのものについては梅田さんのblogにも書かれているのでそちらでご覧いただければ。このことばはもちろんあのダ・ビンチのことばであるところがミソなのだが、連想して私が思い出したのは、ダ・ビンチほど聡明ではなかった（であろう）、でもそれなりに優れていたはずの人たちのことばだ。

ネタ本は「SHAZAM: User's Reference Manual Version 7.0」だ。10年以上前の統計ソフトのマニュアル本なのだが、今でも売っていて、Amazonで買える。SHAZAMを使わなくなった今でも手放せないのは、実戦的な統計学のよいテキストであるというだけでなく、各章の冒頭に引用された数々のことばがとても気に入っているからだ。折にふれて思い出すのだが、今回梅田さんの話につられて今回再び思い出したというわけだ。

見たことあるぞ、というものも多いだろうが、これだけ並べるとちょっと「壮観」だ。私がこれらの何を気に入っているかは、特段説明しないがお分かりいただけると思う。これらの人々は、決して愚か者ではなかった。少なくともこれらのことばが語られたその時点では、非常に説得力があっただろうと思う。だからこそ、これらのことばには価値があるのだ。

私も、これに付け加えたらいいのではと思うことばを収集している。最近だと、「ネットとメディア」まわりに興味深い（ネット用語でいうと「香ばしい」だろうか）ものが多くみられるように思う。別の機会に書いてみたい。
