聞きかじったところによると、いわゆる「AI」なるものは昔考えられていたよりはずっと難しいようで、よくイメージされるような、人間より賢い機械というのは未だに生まれていないようだ。そもそも人間の「知性」とは何かというあたりからしてよくわかっていないらしい。

それでも、いくつかの限られた領域では、一定の「思考」を行うプログラムができていて、実用にもなっているし、今も研究が進んでいるから、今後さらに発展していくんだろう。さて今後50年の間にどこまで行けるだろう、というのがこの会合の趣旨らしい。50年前にも同様の会合が行われ、そこで「AI」ということばが生まれた、とある。歴史的な会議、ってわけだ。今回のカンファレンスには、50年前の会議に出席した人たちも呼ばれている。

で、今回はこんな会議になるらしい。

Leaders in artificial intelligence research will assemble at Dartmouth again to examine how far AI has progressed in the past half-century and will help to chart AI's research agenda for the future. Further developments in many of areas of AI including knowledge, reasoning, natural language, learning, vision, and robotics will be explored. In addition philosophical and social aspects of future AI will be considered.

うーん、そそるではないか。「ラララ科学の子」ではないか。もうちょっと（だいぶ）頭がよかったら、こういうことをやりたかったな。

しかし、見逃してはいけない。「Co-Sponsored by:」のところに、しっかりあるではないか。「DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency)」の名が（リンク先のDARPAサイトのトップ画面がなぜかつながらない。いったい何が）。無人兵器の開発に邁進しているこの国では、軍が最大の顧客、ということなんだろうな。うむむ。

気を取り直して、プログラムを見てみる。

やはり気になるのは最後の「DARPA's Perspective」。いったいどんな。それと、その前の「The Future of the Future」セッションの"Why We Can Be Confident of Turing Test Capability Within a Quarter Century"もなんだか面白そう。あの「チューリング・テスト」だが、「Confident」というぐらいだからよほど「confident」なんだろう（コメントになってないね）。そうなのかぁ、と素人なりにうなずいてみたり。

3日めはその他もろもろ、といったところ。「AI and Games」セッションもしっかりある。最近のゲームは昔のものと比べてNPCがかなり「賢く」なってきているわけだが、今後さらに進んでいくんだろう。「攻殻機動隊」の世界みたいに、誰が人間で誰がNPCかわからないような状態になったりするんだろうか。映画の「Lord of the Rings」シリーズでは、MassiveのAIエンジンで動いてる「バーチャル俳優」が使われているが、戦闘なんかだったら、もう見分けがつかないのかもしれない。そうなったらMMORPGの面白さがオフラインの1人用ゲームで実現できたりするんだろうか。そのときMMORPGはいったいどうなるんだろうか。

最後のセッションにある「Survival as a Digital Ghost」も面白そう。自分の性格とか記憶とかを入れて残しておいて、人に対応してくれる、みたいな感じなんだろうか。そういえば「i, ROBOT」にそんなシーンがあったな。ネット上に「墓」を作ってくれるサービスというのが今すでに存在するが、この「Digital Ghost」はさらに一歩上をいく付加価値とみた。遺言と組み合わせる手もある。葬祭関連産業の方、要注目では。ゲーム業界の方も、これに限らず「メモリアル」需要の可能性について、考えてみるといいかもしれない。
