10 Trillion Yen Dragonball Coins to Finance Abenomics
This news is amazing (in Japanese). It says, the Japanese government plans to mint and issue 10 trillion yen gold coins, with the shape of the "Dragonball."
This is a fake news.
The plan is inspired by an idea that the U.S. Treasury produce trillion-dollar platinum coins to avoid the fiscal cliff problem. The Japanese government does not face fiscal cliff, but they need money for their fiscal expansion, which is an important part of the economic policy of Abe administration (so called Abenomics).
The government has been planning to issue commemorative coins to promote its "Cool Japan" campaign. The 10 trillion coin issue is now included in this program. The coins are designed by Akira Toriyama, the author of one of the best selling manga in the world, "Dragonball." They are ball-shaped rather than coin-shaped, and weigh 200 tons with the diameter of approximately 2.7 meters.
Once Japan was known as Zipang, the land of gold. Issuing and exporting gold coins with the shape of Dragonballs reminds the people of the world that this country has both economic prosperity and rich culture. This would be the image of "cool Japan." Again, this news is amazing, except that today is April 1.
